Welcome back Psi Chi!!!!! We hope you all enjoyed the winter break and caught up on some sleep! We are thrilled to have you all back for our first meeting of 2018! During this meeting, we had a few guest speakers discuss information on Peer Mentors and summer research programs.

Peer Mentors will be having a recruitment session on Thursday (January 11, 2018) at U-hour (12:00-12:50PM) for any of you interested in applying to be a peer mentor next year! Peer Mentors are given the opportunity to network with faculty and develop necessary leadership skills. It is a great way to get more involved within the Psychology department, so we encourage you all to attend this meeting and apply! The current peer mentor advisor is Dr. Nemiro, but Dr. Langford will be taking over for the next cohort of students.

The majority of our meeting involved a Q&A session with a panel of research assistants from Western University and Stanford University. The assistant from Western University worked on applying therapy using animals. She mentioned that her time as a research assistant was like a part-time job with about 7 hours of weekly work. The experience was great for her and she was able to network with graduate students and faculty. The assistant from Stanford is a Sociology major and his research was focused on race and comparative segregation. He advised that everyone should apply to a program because of the benefits you gain from it. Some of the benefits include a stipend, free housing, free flights, GRE training, tutoring, mentoring, and more. The goal is for students to gain graduate research experience. The application process for summer research programs are free, but does require students to submit an essay, transcript, statement of purpose, letter of recommendations, etc.

Here are a few deadlines approaching for Summer Research Programs:

Leadership Alliance: February 1, 2018
Big 10 Alliance: February 10, 2018
Stanford CSLI (Center for the Study of Language and Information): February 16, 2018
UC Irvine SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship): February 7, 2018
