Hey Psi Chi! For this general meeting, we had guest speaker Dr. Monica Rosales! Dr. Rosales is a data analyst for the Department of Public Health in the Tuberculosis Program. She received her B.A. in Psychology at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Her early research involvement includes topics such as ethnic identity on college campuses and readability of health brochures. Through this research, she studied how easily people can read brochures and what education level people need to comprehend the information. For graduate school, Dr. Rosales received an M.S. and PhD in Applied Social and Health Psychology at Colorado State University. A few of her research projects include "Where's Maria/Donde Esta Maria" which is a video intervention for Latina breast cancer screening scale. She also conducted projects on marital last name selections, newspaper reporting, and injury prevention among migrant farm workers. Following earning her PhD, Dr. Rosales was involved in research fellowship. She worked at the City of Hope National Medical Center and CCARE. She worked with breast and cervical cancer survivors by providing coping interventions and health promotion activities. As previously mentioned, she now works at Tuberculosis Control Program. Her work includes analyzing data, responding to data requests from public and private entities, assuring data integrity, and data quality control. We would love to thank Dr. Rosales for sharing her experience and all the useful advice she provided to our members!

Meet Daisy Martinez. We would like to shout out Daisy on her consistent participation and active involvement as a member of Psi Chi. Daisy joined Psi Chi to get involved in the psychology department and to learn more about her major. She enjoys meeting people new psychology majors and working on her communication skills in the club. Daisy is still exploring the options of what exactly she wants to do as a psychology major, but she has interest in cognitive and industrial/organizational psychology. A few of her hobbies outside of school are photography and slam poetry. A fun fact about Daisy is she auditioned for America's Got Talent as a singing act and made it passed auditions.

Thank you Daisy for all your hard work thus far within our club! We would also like to thank and encourage all of our members for their participation!

In the previous blog post below, we've attached a google doc of the list that you can access.

Here are a few more research opportunities approaching this year. If you are not a psychology major, but your major falls within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) field, we've shared a link to a website offering different summer research programs. The link is provided here:

First General Meeting of Winter Quarter!

1/10/2018

Welcome back Psi Chi!!!!! We hope you all enjoyed the winter break and caught up on some sleep! We are thrilled to have you all back for our first meeting of 2018! During this meeting, we had a few guest speakers discuss information on Peer Mentors and summer research programs.

Peer Mentors will be having a recruitment session on Thursday (January 11, 2018) at U-hour (12:00-12:50PM) for any of you interested in applying to be a peer mentor next year! Peer Mentors are given the opportunity to network with faculty and develop necessary leadership skills. It is a great way to get more involved within the Psychology department, so we encourage you all to attend this meeting and apply! The current peer mentor advisor is Dr. Nemiro, but Dr. Langford will be taking over for the next cohort of students.

The majority of our meeting involved a Q&A session with a panel of research assistants from Western University and Stanford University. The assistant from Western University worked on applying therapy using animals. She mentioned that her time as a research assistant was like a part-time job with about 7 hours of weekly work. The experience was great for her and she was able to network with graduate students and faculty. The assistant from Stanford is a Sociology major and his research was focused on race and comparative segregation. He advised that everyone should apply to a program because of the benefits you gain from it. Some of the benefits include a stipend, free housing, free flights, GRE training, tutoring, mentoring, and more. The goal is for students to gain graduate research experience. The application process for summer research programs are free, but does require students to submit an essay, transcript, statement of purpose, letter of recommendations, etc.

Here are a few deadlines approaching for Summer Research Programs:

Leadership Alliance: February 1, 2018
Big 10 Alliance: February 10, 2018
Stanford CSLI (Center for the Study of Language and Information): February 16, 2018
UC Irvine SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship): February 7, 2018

We would also like to provide you a link for a list of Psychology related conferences that you may be interested in. Please click the link below here:
