What is Psi Chi?
Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship and advancing the science of psychology. Membership is open to graduated and undergraduate women and men who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and who meet the minimum qualifications. Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). Psi Chi functions as a federation of chapters located at more than 840 senior colleges and universities in the USA. A National Council, composed of psychologists who are Psi Chi members and who are elected by the chapters, guides the affairs of the organization and sets policy with the approval of the chapters. What are Our Goals?
Psi Chi serves two major goals. The first of these is the Society's obligation to provide academic recognition to its inductees by the mere fact of membership. The second goal is the obligation of each of the Society's local chapters to nurture the spark of that accomplishment by offering a climate congenial to its creative development. For example, the chapters make active attempts to nourish and stimulate professional growth through programs designed to augment and enhance the regular curriculum and provide practical experience and fellowship through affiliation with the chapter. In addition, the national organization provides programs to help achieve these goals, including national and regional conventions held annually in conjunction with the psychological associations, research award competitions, and certificate recognition programs. Also, the Society publishes a quarterly Psi Chi Newsletter which helps to unite and inform the members and to recognize their contributions and accomplishments.

The intrinsic value of membership is rewarding to the achiever in that recognition of excellence leads to self-fulfillment and thus to self-realization. Also, the contacts made through Psi Chi will be valuable throughout your educational and professional careers. Concrete advantages of membership include: The documents - a membership certificate and card which give tangible evidence of membership. The references provided throughout one's lifetime. The experience gained is excellent for building up a resume. Psi Chi is a springboard for professional growth. Opportunities are made available to the members for promoting their research, receiving national and international recognition, meeting and interacting with leaders in their field, and meeting members of other Psi Chi chapters. The ultimate test of any membership organization lies in the accomplishments of its members. Today, Psi Chi is well represented in the professional ranks of all the behavioral sciences.
How Do I Join?
Students become members by joining the chapter at Cal Poly Pomona. Psi Chi chapters are operated by student officers and faculty advisors. Together they select and induct new members and carry out the goals of the Society. Anyone interested in joining Psi Chi should take the initiative and contact the Psychology Department, faculty advisors, and/or student officers. All chapters register their inductees at the Psi Chi National Office, where the membership records are preserved for reference purposes. The total number of members recorded at the National Office during the first 70 years is over 270,000.
What are the Minimum Qualifications?
Anyone can attend or participate in Psi Chi's events and activities! In order to be inducted as a International Member and experience all the benefits Psi Chi has to offer on an international level, you must complete at least 5 quarters of college courses and complete 14 quarter hours of Psychology courses for major or minor standing in Psychology or for a program psychological in nature. Undergraduates who are elected to Psi Chi must have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00 and rank in the upper 35% of their class in general scholarship. They must also demonstrate superior scholarship in psychology, earning a minimum GPA in psychology courses of 3.00. Psi Chi accepts the policy of the institution regarding grades. For graduate students, an average grade of "B" or better in all graduate courses, including psychology. High standards of personal behavior and attendance at chapter events is also expected.
Does it Cost Anything to Join?
Yes, your membership dues help our members enjoy the club and get the most out of it. Chapter dues go towards guest speakers, special events, food at meetings and scholarship opportunities. Dues are typically around $30 and cover the entire academic year. This does not count for your international membership, which is through Psi Chi International.
