Dr. Alejandro Morales - Advisor
Dr. Alejandro Morales is an associate professor of Psychology. He conducts qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies in understanding the psycho-social-cultural mechanisms of adjustment in Latino immigrant families with children who serve as translators and interpreters (i.e., language brokers). His research also focuses on identifying the processes that facilitate the psychological wellbeing of Latino gay men. He teaches courses on abnormal psychology, basic counseling skills, intimate relationships, human sexuality, and couple's therapy. He received his PhD and MA in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his BA in Psychology from the California State University, Dominguez Hills. When not teaching, meeting with students to talk about research and graduate school, Dr. Morales enjoys watching documentaries. He is a fan of Harry Potter, butterflies, and any fantasy creature. Career Aspirations: "I want to get my Ph.D in psychology, specifically emphasizing in cognitive psychology. My ultimate goal is to become a professor and come back as a faculty member either at CPP or another CSU, to continue working with the amazing students at our campuses!" Psychology Interests: Cognitive Psychology, more specifically psycho and neurolinguistics Hobbies: exploring coffee shops, places to eat with friends, traveling and rollerblading Experience: "I’ve been a research assistant for former faculty member Dr. Eleonora Rossi since the beginning of my freshman year in 2016 where my main work has a been in the field of psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics, specifically in bilingual language processing. I’m a McNair Scholar (Cohort 20) and I’m also a research assistant for Dr. Mary Danico’s AATRI iGen team. This past summer, I participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research at Florida (SURF) program at the University of Florida and am also currently designing an electroencephalography (EEG) study with Dr. Seyranian and Dr. Rossi!" |
Karli Cheng - Vice-President
Year: 3rd year Psychology major with Minor in Physiology Career Aspirations: I hope to obtain a PhD in clinical psychology and become a scientist-practitioner while mentoring undergraduate and graduate students at a university. I am specifically interested in researching Asian American parenting and family relationships, how parenting styles can affect mental health outcomes in children and adolescents, and destigmatizing talk about mental health within Asian communities. Psychology Interests: Clinical Psychology, psychotherapy, cross-cultural psychology Hobbies: My hobbies are hand lettering, watching The Office, and driving. Experience: I am currently a CSU Pre-Doctoral Sally Casanova Scholar and previously a McNair Scholar last year. This is my third year being involved in research; I started in neuropsychology and now I conduct research with more of a clinical and counseling focus in Dr. Alejandro Morales' Psychology of Immigration Lab. I plan to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology after taking a gap year. |
Daniela Navarro - Treasurer
Year: 3rd year Psychology major Career Aspirations: Right now, I want to get my PhD in clinical or counseling psychology after I finish my undergraduate degree. I don't know exactly what I want to do but I want to have my private practice and teach at a university Psychology Interests: Hobbies: Playing with my dog, hanging out with my friends, sleeping and listening to music Experience: I have done research with Dr. Seyranian in her lab since the beginning of my second year. I am currently a McNair Scholar working on my own project with Dr. Seyranian as well. |
Kelly Nguyen - Secretary
Year: 3rd Year Psychology major with an emphasis in Industrial/Organizational Psych and a minor in Management and Human Resources. Career Aspirations: After obtaining my bachelor’s I would like to go to grad school to pursue a PhD. I want to either teach or work as a consultant for an organization/business. Psychology Interests: Industrial/Organizational Psychology, I am specifically interested in looking at gender differences within the workplace, performance and motivation within teams, and how to improve employee well-being in organizations. Hobbies: I love dancing! I watch a lot of K-dramas as well. I am really into fashion so guess I would have to say online shopping is one of my hobbies. Experience: I am currently on the Asian American Transnational Research Initiative team where we study millennials and their outlook on life, politics, and their hopes and aspirations. In addition, I am part of the Ronald E. McNair Scholars, Cohort 21. I am working on a personal study with my mentor Dr. Aytug, and we are looking at how multicultural experiences influence creativity in negotiations. Angela Corella - Public Relations
Year: 3rd year Psychology Major and Nutrition Minor Career Aspirations: I want to apply to medical school after obtaining my bachelor's degree and if that doesn't work out I plan on going to graduate school and pursuing a degree in health psychology. My ultimate goal is to work with individuals who struggle with addiction and substance abuse and develop better treatments to combat those issues. Psychology Interests: Abnormal Psychology, Health Psychology, Addiction Hobbies: Yoga, trying out new food places, hanging out with friends Experience: This past summer I interned at USC Keck School of Medicine where I worked on a research project involving the community of Los Angeles and the use of tobacco, marijuana and e-cigarettes. This year I plan on doing research with professors on campus and volunteering my time at Kaiser Permanente to gain clinical experience. Sarah Duffy - C.L.A.S.S. Council Representative
Year: 5th year Psychology major Career Aspirations: I want to get my PhD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in either Developmental or Child and Family psychology. Jackie Pineda - Social Chair
Year: 3rd Year Psychology Major Career Aspirations: After my bachelor’s I plan to obtain a PhD in clinical psychology. I hope to work with troubled children and adolescents specifically in low income neighborhoods, to promote mental health and reduce negative stigmas towards mental illness.
